| NY Auto Show: Acura ZDX Short of A Reinvention The rhetoric I heard from the Acura stand was over the top as I was walking to an intrerview at Ford. I heard a Honda exec talk about "re-inventing the automobile."Did they figure out how to run a car on the coffee served at the Javitz Center Wednesday breakfast? Would California agree to that?It was, in fact, the unveiling of the Acura ZDX. Like the BMW X6 before it, the car is a luxury "sport utility coupe." Those are my words. How about calling it a "SUC."It is a mash up of a 2+2 coupe and a crossover sport utility. The higher riding height is one of the features that distinguishes it from, say, a Honda Accord Coupe.But reinventing the automobile? Only if it runs on Sanka.It is built on the MDX platform SUV platform and will be manufactured in the same Canadian factory, powered by the MDX power train--a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6.How much, how soon? In production this summer, at dealers by fall. While the X6 starts around $55,000, the ZDX will undercut that. But nobody is saying yet by how much. rss.businessweek.com |
